The state of Florida has opened a migrant detention center in the Everglades. Its official name is Alligator Alcatraz, a reference to the former maximum security federal penitentiary in San Francisco Bay.
Interestingly, Florida isn’t alone in this campaign. Other southern states, including South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama, are in on it too. Essentially, the south is a no-speeding zone for now. Florida is especially noteworthy, though, because it now has a super speeder law on the books.
Hospital closures also mean longer ambulance rides for rural residents. Charlie Brunner, the fire chief in Jackson County in Florida’s Panhandle, said the 2017 closure of a critical access hospital in his county “left a huge hole” in the area’s health care services.
