DES MOINES, Iowa — Multiple people have been removed from a homeless encampment on the north side of Des Moines and one witness claims they were wrongly removed. Under city policy, if there's a safety or sanitation complaint about a homeless encampment, the city must post a notice to vacate the premises 10 days before the camp is torn down.

The city of Vacaville recently spent over $22,000 to clean up illegal homeless encampments throughout the area, according to the Vacaville Police Department. “These illegal encampments can quickly develop into public health issues due to the presence of biohazard material,

City officials told KCCI this move was conducted under a city ordinance but not the new public camping policy the city passed this year.
