The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has implemented its traceability guidelines starting 1 December 2024. While the initiative aims to curb spam, phishing, and cyber fraud, mobile subscribers might experience temporary delays in receiving messages and one-time passwords (OTPs) during the transition period.

TRAI confirms new message traceability regulations will not delay OTP delivery for Aadhaar and net banking services.

With effect from December 11, any traffic (messages) where the chain of Telemarketers is not defined or does not match with pre-defined chain shall be rejected.

Recent social media posts and reports indicated that starting December 1, 2024, users might face delays in receiving one-time passwords (OTPs) for services like Aadhaar verification and net banking. The delay was said to be caused by new regulations by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI),

All telecom operators and messaging service providers will have to check the origin and authenticity of every message under these rules. All these steps are being taken under the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) system which was started to stop spam and increase message traceability.

With digital transactions heavily dependent on OTPs, TRAI’s reassurance comes as a relief for consumers and enterprises alike.
