If Ullmark is ready to return, Merilainen will be sent back to the American Hockey League affiliate in Belleville. The 22-year-old doesn’t have to clear NHL waivers before reassignment to the AHL, so that’s the easiest move for Steve Staios, the president of hockey operations and general manager.

According to TSN Ottawa, Ottawa Senators goaltender Linus Ullmark (back) will not serve as the backup on Thursday evening when the Senators face the Capitals. The team expressed optimism that Ullmark could return during their current homestand but will need at least another day to recover.

Ullmark's next chance to suit up will be at home against Minnesota on Saturday.
