Romania's hard-right Alliance for Uniting Romanians (AUR) party wants to be part of a coalition government, its leader said on Tuesday, as the nation eyes a presidential run-off vote that will decide who appoints the prime minister.

After Calin Georgescu's shock win in the first round of the presidential election, Romania will elect a new parliament on Sunday. Many— both in Romania and across Europe— fear another record result for the far right.

Romanian opposition hard-right leader George Simion said on Tuesday his party would like to be in a governing coalition but it rules out a coalition with Social Democrats. The ruling leftist Social Democrat Party (PSD) won Sunday's parliamentary election but far-right parties gained a third of seats in the new legislature.
