Erik and Lyle Menendez’s efforts to reduce their life-without-parole prison terms have been in limbo after the ouster earlier this month of Los Angeles County’s top prosecutor, who recommended a new sentence that could clear the way for the brothers’ release.

A Los Angeles County judge on Monday postponed a hearing over the possible release of Lyle and Erik Menendez after 35 years in prison for the shotgun murder of their parents, saying he wanted to hear from a new district attorney taking office next week.

The high-profile murder trial of the Menendez brothers has several moving parts, and one of the biggest decision-makers will be the incoming Los Angeles county district attorney, Nathan Hochman, who was a factor in Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic’s decision on Monday to delay the resentencing hearing.
