A child in California has been infected with H5N1 avian flu, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed. This is the first such case reported in a minor in the US and brings the total number of confirmed human cases in 2024 to 55.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday confirmed the country's first case of H5N1 bird flu infection in a child, who experienced mild symptoms and is recovering from their illness.

Investigation into the child's exposure to H5N1 is still under way, the CDC said. In other H5N1 developments, the Hawaii State Department of Health yesterday said tests in people who had contact with an infected flocks are all negative, even in those who had high-risk exposure.
