The odds of winning the lottery are low, but players in some states hit the jackpot more than others. Here are the luckiest states to play the lottery.

For every dollar spent on a lottery ticket, 63 cents goes toward prizes. Nine cents toward lottery sales commissions and 3 cents for operations and administration costs. That leaves about a quarter for Michigan’s School Aid Fund. We decided to find out what happens next to that quarter:

Wayne County saw the most overall lottery sales in 2025 for a total of more than $1 billion, accounting for nearly a fourth of all sales in the state. The county is home to Detroit and, in 2024, an estimated population of nearly 1.8 million.
