TORONTO (AP) — Hannah Miller scored a power-play goal with 1:38 remaining in the game, lifting the Toronto Sceptres to a 3-1 victory over the Boston Fleet in the Professional Women’s Hockey League season opener on Saturday.

Sarah Nurse, Emma Maltais, Kristen Campbell and the injured Natalie Spooner received the biggest roars during introductions. And when the Sceptres and Boston Fleet lined up at the blue lines for the anthems, anticipation was high among the towel-waving crowd of 8,089.

The Toronto Sceptres signed five players to fill out their 2024-25 PWHL roster ahead of puck drop on the new season.

The Toronto Sceptres’ third-period pressure finally paid off as they skated away with a 3-1 win over the Boston Fleet Saturday in the PWHL home opener.

Hannah Miller was camped netside with Toronto on the power play and Hillary Knight in the penalty box after a dangerous boarding penalty left Renata Fast slow to get up. Miller was Janey on the Spot as a Daryl Watts rebound bounced directly to her and she made no mistake hitting the wide open net.

The Toronto Sceptres have nine new faces in the lineup heading into Year 2 in the PWHL, which begins on Saturday afternoon when they host the Boston Fleet at the Coca-Cola Coliseum.

The Fleet jumped out to an early lead, when three minutes in, captain Hilary Knight scored on the power play. Knight received the puck from defender Megan Keller and scored her first PWHL power play goal on the tripping penalty to Toronto’s Maggie Conner.

After captain Hilary Knight scored just three minutes into their season opener against the Toronto Sceptres, the Fleet struggled to get shots on net for the final 57 minutes.
