Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan launched a campaign for Michigan governor on Wednesday, and says he is running as an Independent. Duggan the first top-tier candidate in either party to jump into the 2026 race. He made the announcement that he wouldn't be running as a Democrat in a video posted online.

Duggan, a Democrat, is currently serving his third four-year term as Detroit's mayor and is the second longest-serving mayor.

"It's clear to me that there are a lot of people in this country who are tired of both parties and tired of the system," Duggan said.
